The San Francisco 49ers recently concluded their minicamp, providing some exciting updates on their players' progress and preparations for the upcoming season. Here are the notable observations from the mandatory minicamp:
Offensive tackle Trent Williams made a welcome return to the 49ers' facility after attending his daughter's graduation, although he did not participate in any on-field drills. This gave him an opportunity to recharge and rest before the start of training camp in late July.
Defensive tackle Maliek Collins, who had skipped the offseason program to be with his family, was present in Santa Clara and worked on a side field during the minicamp. Several other veteran players opted to sit out the practices to ensure their health and readiness for the upcoming season.
Newly signed veteran tight end Logan Thomas wasted no time and joined practice shortly after signing with the 49ers. He showcased his skills by catching a pass from Brandon Allen during the 7-on-7 drills, making an immediate impact on the field.
Second-year tight end Brayden Willis displayed noticeable improvement in his involvement in the team's passing game this offseason. Meanwhile, star tight end George Kittle continued to undergo physical therapy after offseason core-muscle surgery. Willis made an impressive catch in traffic on a seam route from Brock Purdy, as well as another catch against tight coverage from linebacker Dee Winters.
Cameron Latu, a third-round pick from last season, showcased his progress by running near full speed on a side field. Latu spent his rookie season on injured reserve but has made a strong recovery from knee surgery and is on track to be ready for the start of training camp.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel proved his worth by making consecutive receptions on throws from Brock Purdy, including a 35-yard gain against cornerback Samuel Womack's coverage. Samuel's performance reaffirmed his importance to the team's passing game.
Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall caught the eye of head coach Kyle Shanahan with his reliable hands and consistent performance during the minicamp. Shanahan praised Pearsall for his skills, stating that he rarely drops passes and has quickly impressed the coaching staff with his versatility.
The 49ers are seeking improved production from the defensive end position, and veteran Leonard Floyd showed promise during the minicamp with an impressive speed move that bypassed right tackle Colton McKivitz, putting pressure on Purdy.
Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos demonstrated his defensive prowess by not falling for a bootleg play and forcing an incomplete pass by Purdy, disrupting the offensive drive.
Lastly, the 49ers dedicated a period of practice to working on the new kickoff format. Several players, including Mitchell, Bell, Pearsall, Taylor, Owens, and Schrader, had the opportunity to showcase their skills as return men.
With the minicamp concluded, the 49ers are now looking forward to their training camp in late July, where they will continue to develop their roster and fine-tune their strategies for the upcoming season.
