The New York Yankees have recently announced that they have reached an agreement with free-agent reliever Lou Trivino on a one-year contract. The deal also includes a club option for the 2025 season, providing the team with flexibility for the future.
Trivino, who is now 32 years old, had missed the entire previous season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. However, his performance prior to the injury was impressive, as he boasted a 1.66 ERA (240 ERA+) and a 2.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 25 appearances with the Yankees after being acquired in a trade in 2022.
The decision to non-tender Trivino by the Yankees last November came as a surprise to many, but the team has now decided to bring him back into the fold. The Yankees originally acquired Trivino as part of a trade that also netted them right-hander Frankie Montas. In exchange, they had to part ways with pitchers Luis Medina, JP Sears, and Ken Waldichuk, as well as infielder Cooper Bowman.
Given the nature of Tommy John surgery, which typically requires at least 12 months of recovery time and sometimes even longer, it is expected that Trivino will not make his debut until sometime in July at the earliest. However, his return will undoubtedly bolster the Yankees' bullpen and provide much-needed depth in the later innings.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees have placed outfielder Jasson Domínguez on the 60-day injured list. Domínguez, who is only 21 years old, underwent Tommy John surgery last September after making a strong impression in his limited time in the major leagues. He recorded a slash line of .258/.303/.677 (158 OPS+) with four home runs, seven runs batted in, and a stolen base in just eight games.
While position players generally have shorter recovery timelines from Tommy John surgery, Domínguez is not expected to be available for at least the start of the upcoming season. Manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in his return, stating during an interview that "he'll be back in the summer for us."
The Yankees have not provided an official timetable for Domínguez's return, but his presence in the lineup will undoubtedly be missed. The team will have to rely on other outfield options as they aim to compete in the highly competitive American League East.
With the addition of Trivino and the unfortunate absence of Domínguez, the Yankees are making moves to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season. Fans will have to wait to see these players in action, but the anticipation for their return is already building.
