The trade involved parting ways with shortstop Trey Sweeney and opens up roster spots for Ohtani and reliever Joe Kelly.

The Yankees' focus on bolstering their pitching staff has been apparent, with the recent acquisitions of outfielders Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo. General Manager Brian Cashman emphasized the importance of on-boarding pitching to complement these roster moves.

Victor González, 28, presents a potential solution to the Yankees' bullpen needs, particularly in light of the potential departure of free agent left-hander Wandy Peralta. Over 33 2/3 innings in the 2023 season, González showcased a 4.01 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP, effectively shutting down opponents in 27 out of his 34 appearances. His recovery from elbow surgery in 2022 did not seem to hamper his performance, as he limited left-handed batters to a .564 OPS.

Infielder Jorbit Vivas, 22, joins the Yankees as their No. 10 prospect, as per MLB Pipeline rankings. During the 2023 season, Vivas displayed his versatility by playing second base and third base. He contributed a batting average of .269, 13 home runs, 25 steals, and a .788 OPS over 135 games between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City.

On the other end of the trade, shortstop Trey Sweeney is now ranked as the Dodgers' No. 18 prospect, facing a roadblock to the Majors due to the presence of Yankees shortstops Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Sweeney, the 20th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, spent the entirety of the 2023 season with Double-A Somerset, showcasing a .252 batting average, 13 home runs, 20 steals, and a .778 OPS in 100 games.

As the Yankees look to solidify their roster, managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner and others are set to meet with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the Los Angeles area. The Yankees' pursuit of pitching talent continues, as they strive to build a formidable team for the upcoming season.

With the acquisition of González and Vivas, the Yankees remain dedicated to fortifying their team in preparation for the challenges ahead. The ripple effect of Ohtani's deal continues to reverberate across the league, shaping the strategies and moves of teams as they navigate the offseason.
