Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl has announced his retirement after a successful tenure with the Cowboys. Bohl, who led the team to six bowl appearances and won three FCS national titles at North Dakota State, will step down following the Arizona Bowl on December 30.
The 65-year-old Bohl, who has been with Wyoming for 10 seasons, leaves behind an impressive coaching legacy. Under his leadership, the Cowboys reached a bowl game in six of the past eight seasons, with three bowl victories, the most in team history. Bohl's final Cowboys team also made history, achieving a 7-0 record, the first in the program's history.
Reflecting on his time at Wyoming, Bohl expressed his gratitude towards the players, assistant coaches, and staff who have contributed to the program's success. He stated, "Being the head football coach of the Wyoming Cowboys has been a privilege. I felt like now was the time for me to step away and entrust the program to new leadership."
In light of Bohl's retirement, Wyoming has announced the promotion of defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel as the new head coach. Sawvel, who has been with the team for four years, has impressed as the defensive coordinator, with his unit finishing in the top 25 nationally in several categories, including takeaways.
Sawvel, who previously worked at Minnesota and Wake Forest in similar capacities, expressed his excitement and honor at being named the next head coach. He acknowledged Bohl's impact on the program, stating, "The infrastructure Coach Bohl has put into this program makes me very excited to be the next leader of this program."
Additionally, Bohl is reportedly a leading candidate to assume the role of executive director of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Having served as AFCA president during the 2022 season and filling in as interim executive director, Bohl is now being considered as the likely successor to Todd Berry, pending board approval.
The retirement of Craig Bohl marks the end of an era for Wyoming football. As the search for his replacement begins, the Cowboys will aim to continue their winning tradition and build upon the foundation established by Bohl during his successful tenure.
