New Washington Huskies coach Jedd Fisch continues to make waves with his coaching staff, as reports suggest that the team is set to bring on board Steve Belichick as its defensive coordinator. Belichick, who currently serves as an assistant for the New England Patriots, brings a wealth of NFL experience to the role.

The younger Belichick has spent the last 12 seasons working under his father, the legendary Bill Belichick, with the Patriots. Although he has never held the official title of defensive coordinator, Belichick has been in charge of defensive play-calling for the past five seasons. Despite the absence of the coordinator designation, the Patriots' defense has consistently ranked among the best in the league during Belichick's tenure.

In fact, the Patriots finished seventh in total defense during the 2023 season, allowing just 301.6 yards per game. Since 2019, they have only finished outside of the top 10 in total defense once. In 2019, under Belichick's guidance, the team led the NFL in both total defense and scoring defense.

Belichick joined the Patriots' coaching staff in 2012 as a defensive assistant and steadily progressed to assume various responsibilities. He became the safeties coach in 2016 and subsequently took over coaching the entire secondary, along with play-calling duties, in 2019. In 2020, he transitioned to the role of outside linebackers coach.

During his time with the Patriots, Belichick has been instrumental in securing three Super Bowl victories, including two out of three seasons from 2016 to 2018. However, his move to Washington will mark the first time he has worked outside of his father's coaching shadow.

This announcement comes shortly after the hiring of offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll, son of longtime coach Pete Carroll. Both coordinators bring deep NFL ties and come from legendary coaching bloodlines. Carroll, who previously worked on Fisch's staff at Arizona, also has extensive experience with his father's staff at the Seattle Seahawks.

Jedd Fisch was appointed as the Washington Huskies head coach in January, replacing Kalen DeBoer who departed for Alabama after the retirement of famed coach Nick Saban. Fisch joins the team after a successful 10-win season with the University of Arizona, where he guided the program to its first such season since 2014. Now, Fisch will take charge of a Huskies team recently featured in the College Football Playoff National Championship and transition them into the competitive Big Ten conference for the 2024 season.
