According to sources, the Washington Commanders' decision on potential player trades or playoff aspirations will heavily rely on the outcome of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. ESPN.com reports that a victory against the NFC East-leading Eagles would greatly boost the Commanders' season, leaving them with a 4-4 record and a fighting chance for a playoff spot.

On the other hand, a loss to their division rivals would drop the Commanders' record to 3-5, including an 0-3 standing against NFC East opponents. In such a scenario, the Commanders might consider unloading players as early as Monday morning.

Sources indicate that if the Commanders do opt for player trades, their primary focus will be on the defensive line. Both Chase Young and Montez Sweat are in the final year of their contracts and expected to become free agents soon. It is rumored that at least one team has expressed interest in Sweat. However, Washington intends to observe the team's performance as well as the offers they receive before making any final decisions. Trading one of the pass-rushers could result in maximizing compensation in the 2024 draft, rather than waiting for a compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL draft if they were to lose either Young or Sweat in free agency.

In addition to Chase Young and Montez Sweat, the Commanders have also received trade inquiries regarding defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. However, sources reveal that Washington is determined to retain Allen and has no intention of engaging in trade discussions with other teams.

League sources emphasize that despite the upcoming changes in ownership, the Commanders' front office and staff have been instructed to prioritize the team's best interests in any trade negotiations.

Furthermore, several other players are in the last year of their contracts, potentially garnering draft compensation if the Commanders decide to be more aggressive in the next 24 to 48 hours before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline. Among the players on expiring contracts are quarterback Jacoby Brissett, running back Antonio Gibson, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, linebacker Cody Barton, and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

Jacoby Brissett, who played for the Cleveland Browns last season, could become a suitable candidate for the Browns if they deem it necessary to reinforce their quarterback position due to Deshaun Watson's rotator cuff injury.

Antonio Gibson and Curtis Samuel are seen as valuable assets that other teams may have their eyes on, potentially leading to trade discussions. The Commanders appear willing to engage in trade negotiations, especially if they fail to secure a victory in Sunday's crucial game.

With the outcome of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles holding significant weight, the Washington Commanders are preparing to make crucial decisions regarding potential player trades and their playoff aspirations.
