In a turn of events, Washington Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been added to the injury report due to a hamstring injury suffered in practice earlier this week. Brissett, who was named the starter for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers, is now questionable for the matchup.
Brissett reported tightness in his hamstring after meetings on Thursday and received treatment that night and again on Friday. The coaching staff and medical team are closely monitoring his progress to determine if he will be fit to play on Sunday.
If Brissett is unable to take the field, rookie quarterback Sam Howell will step in as the starter. This comes just four days after Coach Ron Rivera announced that Howell would be replaced by Brissett.
Howell had been benched in the team's previous two games, both resulting in losses against the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Jets. In both instances, Brissett entered the game and rallied the team. Against the Rams, he led touchdown drives on consecutive series, despite the 28-20 loss. Similarly, against the Jets, Brissett orchestrated three consecutive touchdown drives to take a 28-27 lead, only to fall short on a last-minute field goal.
In his two appearances, Brissett has showcased impressive numbers, completing 78.3% of his passes for 224 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Notably, he has not been sacked during his playing time.
Brissett, who has started 48 games in his eight-year career, will become the ninth starting quarterback under Coach Rivera's leadership.
Regardless of who starts at quarterback, the Commanders (4-11) are facing a challenging battle against the San Francisco 49ers, primarily due to the number of injuries plaguing the team. Several key starters, including center Tyler Larsen (knee), left tackle Charles Leno Jr. (calf), and cornerbacks Benjamin St-Juste (concussion) and Kendall Fuller (knee), will be sidelined for Sunday's game.
With uncertainty surrounding Brissett's availability and a depleted roster, the Commanders will need to rely on their depth and resilience to compete against the formidable 49ers.
