The Washington Commanders are gearing up to host the San Francisco 49ers this week, but they will be facing some significant challenges with several key players sidelined due to injuries. Head Coach Ron Rivera made the decision to name Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback, replacing Sam Howell who was benched earlier this week. However, Brissett's status for Sunday's game is now uncertain due to hamstring tightness, casting doubt on his availability.

Rivera expressed optimism about Brissett's recovery, stating that he took some reps in practice and looked promising while moving around. The team will be closely monitoring Brissett's progress over the next 48 hours to make a final determination on his participation in the game. If Brissett is unable to play, Howell will be thrust back into the starting role. The Commanders also have Jake Fromm on the practice squad, who could potentially be elevated as either the third quarterback or Brissett's backup in case he is ruled out.

In addition to the quarterback situation, the Commanders will also have to contend with several other significant injuries. Five players have already been ruled out for the game against the 49ers, including cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, who remains in the concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in the Jets game. Safety Percy Butler will also be absent due to a wrist injury, despite initially being limited in practice on Wednesday. Cornerback Kendall Fuller, who had a veteran rest day, has now been ruled out of the game, forcing Washington to make adjustments in their secondary.

The Commanders' secondary will undergo some rearrangements in the absence of Fuller, St-Juste, and Butler. Quan Martin will step in at nickel and safety alongside Kam Curl and Terrell Burgess. Emmanuel Forbes and Tariq Castro-Fields will take over at cornerback, tasked with filling the void left by the injured players.

In the offensive line, center Tyler Larsen and left tackle Charles Leno Jr. will both be out against the 49ers due to knee and calf injuries, respectively. They will be replaced by Nick Gates and Cornelius Lucas. Right tackle Andrew Wylie, who suffered an elbow injury in the previous game, is listed as questionable for this week's matchup. If Wylie is unable to play, Trent Scott will step in as his replacement.

The running back position also has some injury concerns for the Commanders. Brian Robinson, who missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, returned to practice this week and is expected to play without any injury designation against the 49ers. Unfortunately, Chris Rodriguez was placed on injured reserve after hurting his ankle in the Jets game. This leaves Robinson and Antonio Gibson as the primary running backs for Washington. Derrick Gore and FB/TE Alex Armah are also available options, and Jaret Patterson has been re-signed to the practice squad as a reinforcement. The status of Jonathan Williams, who suffered a concussion two weeks ago, remains unknown as his injury status has not been updated.

Despite the numerous injury setbacks, the Commanders remain focused on preparing for their game against the San Francisco 49ers. With key players sidelined, the team will need to rely on their depth and adaptability to overcome the challenges and secure a victory on Sunday.
