The Minnesota Vikings are deliberating whether to hold out All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson from Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears, according to coach Kevin O'Connell. Jefferson's potential return from injured reserve concludes with this game, after he injured his right hamstring on October 8.
Since Jefferson's window to return to practice opened on November 8, the Vikings have gradually increased his exertion levels. However, Jefferson has not fully participated in a practice session, leading to his designation as questionable on this week's injury report.
While Jefferson mentioned that he ran at full speed during certain portions of practices, O'Connell revealed that the wide receiver "took part in some team reps" on Saturday. Both Jefferson and O'Connell have emphasized that he will only return when he is fully recovered, taking into account the upcoming bye week in Week 13 that would provide him with additional time for recovery.
O'Connell acknowledged the importance of Jefferson's complete rehabilitation, stating, "We know we've got a lot of football left ahead. We also know we've got the bye week next week that gives us possibly an extra week of preparation for him to feel like he's got more and more work ready to go."
While some teammates believe Jefferson looks ready to play, the coaching staff remains cautious as they prioritize his long-term performance instead of a short-term burst. This delicate balance stems from the nature of Jefferson's hamstring injury, which requires him to reach 100 percent before being cleared for play.
Jefferson expressed his desire not to miss the Bears game but emphasized the importance of patience and following the safe route to ensure his long-term health. He stated, "We're going to weigh the options correctly, making sure that I'm feeling well and prepared to play a game, and if I'm feeling good, I will play."
The Vikings coaching staff will carefully consider the decision, taking into account Jefferson's readiness and the potential benefits of giving him additional rest during the upcoming bye week. Their priority remains the star receiver's full recovery to contribute to the team's success beyond temporary returns.
As Monday night approaches, Vikings fans eagerly await the final decision regarding Justin Jefferson's involvement in the game against the Chicago Bears.
