In a stunning turn of events, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs went from being benched to traded, and then led the Minnesota Vikings to a thrilling comeback victory, all within a span of just seven days. Dobbs' incredible journey during the 2023 NFL season has now become one of the standout stories of the year, as he looks to guide the Vikings to a playoff berth.

During an appearance on the Torchbearers Podcast, Dobbs recounted the rollercoaster ride of his week. It began with a meeting with Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon, who informed Dobbs that rookie Clayton Tune would start in place of the injured Kyler Murray. Despite feeling disappointment, Dobbs understood the circumstances facing the franchise at that moment.

The trade deadline loomed on the following day and, to Dobbs' surprise, he received a text from his agent indicating that he could be traded again. Nevertheless, Dobbs had been assured by Coach Gannon that he would not be traded or released. The quarterback went to bed, only to wake up to another shocking message, this time confirming that he was indeed being traded to the Minnesota Vikings.

With Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins sidelined due to a torn Achilles, it seemed like Dobbs may have been thrust into a starting role. However, rookie Jaren Hall was announced as the starter for the Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Fate had other plans, as Hall suffered a concussion in the first quarter and Dobbs was called upon to take the reins, despite his limited time with the team.

The initial plays didn't go as planned for Dobbs, as he took a safety and later fumbled after being sacked. But the 28-year-old signal-caller quickly regained his composure. Led by the guidance of Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, who relayed crucial information through Dobbs' helmet, the quarterback mounted an impressive 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive just before halftime, narrowing the deficit to one point.

Dobbs continued to thrive in the second half, leading four scoring drives, including the game-winning 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a pass to wide receiver Brandon Powell with just 22 seconds left on the clock. Despite not having the luxury of learning the Vikings playbook, Dobbs relied heavily on O'Connell's in-play communication, receiving audibles, progressions, and protection calls from the coach before the play clock reached 15 seconds.

"It would be like this: He would say, 'On your right, you got a go (route), you got an out, and you got a... ' (it) cuts out," explained Dobbs.

Dobbs' remarkable performance under immense pressure has undoubtedly made him a fan favorite and a pivotal asset for the Vikings moving forward. As the NFL season unfolds, all eyes will be on the resilient quarterback who has quickly become a symbol of determination and adaptability within the league.
