On Tuesday, the NFL revealed the list of candidates for the fan-voted Pepsi Rookie of the Year award for the 2023 season. Among the six nominees, two Detroit Lions players, Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs, have been nominated for this prestigious honor. Fans can vote for their favorite rookie here!
The Pepsi Rookie of the Year award is distinct from the official Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, as it is solely determined by the fans' votes. It provides an opportunity for supporters to recognize and celebrate outstanding rookies from across the league.
Sam LaPorta, the Lions' tight end, had an exceptional season, setting the NFL rookie tight end record for the most catches in a season with 86. His remarkable performance also saw him accumulate 889 receiving yards and score 10 touchdowns, just two shy of the rookie record. LaPorta's stellar debut undoubtedly makes him a strong candidate for the Pepsi Rookie of the Year award.
Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions' running back, had an impressive year despite initially serving as the team's RB2 for a significant portion of the season. From Week 8 onwards, Gibbs showcased his talent and demonstrated his potential, accumulating 945 rushing yards with an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Additionally, he found the end zone 10 times on the ground, tying for third in rushing touchdowns during that period. Gibbs' consistent performance has undoubtedly contributed to his nomination for the Pepsi Rookie of the Year.
However, LaPorta and Gibbs face stiff competition from four other talented rookies. C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans' quarterback, displayed his skills by completing 319 of 499 passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions, earning him a passer rating of 100.8. Bijan Robinson, the Atlanta Falcons' running back, accumulated 976 rushing yards and recorded a total of 58 catches for 487 yards and 4 touchdowns.
De'Von Achane, the Miami Dolphins' running back, showcased his explosive playmaking abilities with 800 rushing yards at an impressive average of 7.8 yards per carry. He also contributed with 27 receptions for 197 yards and 3 touchdowns. Puka Nacua, the wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, had an impressive season as well, amassing 1,486 receiving yards on 105 catches, along with 6 touchdowns.
Although C.J. Stroud appears to be the frontrunner for the award, fans still have an opportunity to influence the outcome by voting for either LaPorta or Gibbs. Both Lions rookies have had outstanding seasons, showcasing their talent, dedication, and contribution to the team.
The fan vote for the Pepsi Rookie of the Year award provides an exciting opportunity for fans to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these rookies. Whether it's LaPorta, Gibbs, or any of the other talented nominees, cast your vote and be a part of recognizing the outstanding rookies of the 2023 NFL season.
