In a surprising move, the Milwaukee Brewers have traded veteran outfielder Mark Canha to the Detroit Tigers, according to a report from ESPN.com. The Brewers decided not to pick up Canha's option for the 2024 season, prompting the trade.

As part of the deal, the Brewers have acquired minor league pitcher Blake Holub from the Tigers. Holub, a 25-year-old right-hander, had an impressive season, going 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA and eight saves in 48 relief appearances with Single-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie.

Milwaukee had until Monday to decide whether to exercise Canha's $11.5 million team option for 2024 or pay a $2 million buyout. Opting for neither, the Brewers instead opted to move Canha, making it the second time he has been traded this year.

Canha, who will turn 35 on February 15, made an impact with the Brewers during their push for an NL Central title this season after being acquired from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. In his 50 games with the Brewers, Canha showcased his offensive prowess, hitting .287 with a .373 on-base percentage, five home runs, and 33 RBIs. He provided a significant highlight moment for the Brewers when he hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning of a 9-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on September 16.

Prior to joining the Brewers, Canha spent his career with the Oakland Athletics from 2015 to 2021 and had a short stint with the Mets in 2022 and 2023. In his overall career, Canha holds a batting average of .250, an on-base percentage of .349, and has hit 113 home runs, along with 417 RBIs.

The Tigers, keen on bolstering their outfield, saw great potential in Canha and eagerly acquired him in this trade. With Canha's experience and offensive abilities, the Tigers hope to strengthen their lineup and compete in the upcoming season.

This trade signifies a new chapter for both Canha and Holub, as they switch organizations in pursuit of their respective goals. It remains to be seen how Canha will further contribute to the Tigers' success and how Holub continues to develop in the Brewers' minor league system.

Only time will tell if this trade proves to be a winning move for both teams involved.
