Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud's recovery from a significant concussion sustained during a game two weeks ago has raised concerns among fans and analysts. Stroud, who has missed his second consecutive game, joins the small group of quarterbacks who have had to sit out due to concussion-related issues this season.
According to CBS Sports research and SportsRadar, at least 20 players in the NFL have missed consecutive games this year due to concussions. Among them, only Vikings rookie quarterback Jaren Hall shares Stroud's fate of missing multiple games while in concussion protocol.
Stroud's absence from practice is particularly notable, as he hasn't participated in any capacity since his Week 14 concussion against the Jets. This lack of involvement is not typical for concussed players, who often gradually return to limited practice activities.
Despite these concerns, the Texans organization remains optimistic about Stroud's recovery. Head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed confidence that the concussion would not bring an early end to Stroud's season. Ryans acknowledged that each concussion and recovery process is unique, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing Stroud's health over rushing him back onto the field.
Stroud's injury occurred during a game against the Jets, when he hit his head hard on the turf. He was immediately removed from the game and evaluated for a concussion, which led to his placement in the concussion protocol. Since then, Stroud has not participated in practice, indicating that he is still in the early stages of the protocol.
The NFL's five-step concussion protocol allows players to gradually return to football-specific activities. Stroud has not progressed to Phase 4, which would allow him to engage in non-contact training drills and limited throwing, reflecting the cautious approach taken by the Texans' medical staff.
Despite his absence, Stroud remains a strong contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year. In just over 12 games, he has thrown for 20 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions, solidifying his impressive rookie campaign.
In Stroud's absence, the Texans will start veteran quarterback Case Keenum in their upcoming game against the Browns. Keenum, who led the team to an overtime victory against the Titans last week, will be given the opportunity to showcase his skills once again. The Texans' playoff hopes hang in the balance as they continue their push for a postseason spot.
While Texans fans eagerly await Stroud's return to the field, the team remains patient and optimistic about his recovery from this significant concussion. The priority is ensuring his long-term health and well-being, with the hope of seeing him back under center in the near future.
