Super Bowl Betting Trends: Early Action Favors Kansas City Chiefs, Prop Bets Skyrocket
ICARO Media Group
In the first week of Super Bowl odds market, bettors have shown a clear preference for the Kansas City Chiefs, according to oddsmakers across the country. Sportsbooks have observed a significant amount of early betting on the Chiefs, despite them being the underdogs. This has led to an interesting situation for bookmakers, as they find themselves actively rooting for the San Francisco 49ers, but also relying on the Chiefs to attract bettors throughout the year in Super Bowl futures.
Leading the Chiefs' bandwagon in terms of support are popular sports betting platforms like PointsBet, Fanatics Experience, BetMGM, and Caesars Sports. These platforms currently need the Kansas City team to perform well in order to turn a profit. However, as the Super Bowl approaches, a surge of money is expected to flood the betting market, potentially shifting the balance.
At PointsBet, the initial betting line favored the 49ers by 1.5 points. Shortly after, the line shifted to -1 in favor of the Niners, but it has since moved back to -2. Despite this back and forth, early analysis shows that the majority of the action has been tilted towards the Chiefs. Approximately 75% of moneyline bets and 72% of spread bets have been placed on the Kansas City team.
Interestingly, many bettors are bypassing the point spread and simply wagering on Kansas City to win outright. This strategy makes sense, as a Chiefs victory would likely result in a successful cover of the 2-point spread. Consequently, betting on the Chiefs' moneyline, with a potential $110 profit on a $100 bet, appears to be the more advantageous option compared to betting on the spread, with a potential profit of $90.81 on a $100 bet.
Will Radice, a trader at PointsBet, attributed the early betting trends to the Chiefs' dominant performances against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens, while the 49ers struggled in their recent matches against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. The slight underdog status of the Chiefs has attracted considerable interest from bettors.
In addition to the game itself, Super Bowl prop bets have gained significant popularity. Casual and recreational bettors, as well as newcomers to sports betting, are finding excitement in placing wagers on various props. Coin-toss props, in particular, are among the most well-bet at DraftKings. The even-money proposition of heads or tails and the betting option for each team to win the coin toss have drawn substantial attention.
Johnny Avello, director of sportsbook operations for DraftKings, emphasized the appeal of coin-flip props, given their simplicity and immediate outcome. The "Tails Never Fails" philosophy has attracted more bets at the moment, with the potential to win $100 profit on a $100 bet. Interestingly, more bettors are also favoring a Kansas City victory in the coin toss.
Another intriguing prop bet is whether the team winning the coin toss will also win the game. Currently, more bets are being placed on "Yes" at DraftKings, priced at -110. This means a $110 bet could yield a $100 profit and a total payout of $210.
With the Super Bowl only a week away, significant amounts of money are expected to change hands based on pre-game events such as the coin toss. The betting landscape remains dynamic, as the market reacts to the ongoing developments and the influx of wagers.
