The decision has allowed the team to free up a significant amount of salary cap space for the 2024 season.
Trubisky, who was signed to a two-year extension last year, was set to count more than $7 million against the Steelers' cap in 2024 and over $8 million in 2025. However, his release has now resulted in a cap hit of $4.6 million for 2024, saving the team approximately $3 million.
The organization initially signed Trubisky, the Chicago Bears' 2017 No. 2 overall pick, during the 2022 free agency period. They later drafted Kenny Pickett as the 2022 first-round pick, setting up a quarterback competition during training camp. Trubisky started the first four games of the 2022 season before being replaced by Pickett in an effort to boost the team's stagnant offense.
Despite hopes that Trubisky would serve as a valuable veteran backup and mentor to Pickett, his performance as a backup in 2023 was underwhelming. He was eventually benched for Mason Rudolph after struggling with interceptions, leading to the decision to release him.
In addition to Trubisky, the Steelers also released offensive lineman Okorafor, saving nearly $9 million in cap space. Okorafor, who had been with the team since being selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, started 59 games and appeared in 77 before being benched for rookie Broderick Jones in favor of a new lineup.
Punter Pressley Harvin, a seventh-round selection in 2021, was also released by the Steelers. Despite beating out longtime punter Jordan Berry in his rookie season, Harvin's performance was inconsistent throughout his three-season tenure. He achieved a net average of 39.4 yards per punt and an overall average of 43.7.
With Trubisky's departure and Rudolph's impending free agency in March, Kenny Pickett currently stands as the sole quarterback on the Steelers' roster for the 2024 season. Pickett, the team's 2022 first-round pick, will likely assume the starting role with the departure of Trubisky.
The Steelers' decision to release Trubisky, Okorafor, and Harvin has allowed the team to make significant cap space savings, totaling nearly $13 million for the 2024 season. This move will allow them to potentially make important signings as they prepare for the upcoming season.
