In a post-game interview on Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Diontae Johnson expressed his frustration with the officiating during the team's home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Johnson was openly critical of the referees, suggesting that their calls favored the Jaguars and played a significant role in the outcome of the game.
"The refs were just killing us the whole game," Johnson stated, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. "I didn't like the refs today. They must've got paid good today or something, but they blew — that field goal, that hurt us coming into the half. We needed that."
Johnson was referring to an offside call on Steelers guard Isaac Semualo during a field goal attempt by kicker Chris Boswell. Initially, Boswell successfully made a 56-yard field goal, but the penalty nullified the score. Boswell subsequently missed the ensuing 61-yard attempt.
Reacting to the call, head coach Mike Tomlin was seen on camera expressing his frustration towards one of the officials, uttering expletives in disbelief.
Referee Alan Eck defended the ruling after the game, stating, "His head was over the back edge of the ball, so by rule, that's an offensive offside foul. It's a live ball foul, so we let the play go through and then we mark off the five-yard penalty."
However, Johnson believed there were more questionable calls that went against the Steelers throughout the game. "They wanted them to win. They were calling everything in their favor. Every little call," Johnson added, as reported by Matt Ehalt of the New York Post.
Despite his frustrations, Johnson acknowledged the team's need to move on from the officiating issues and focus on their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night.
The Steelers' loss to the Jaguars on Sunday dropped their record to 10-1 for the season, while the Jaguars improved to 2-9. The controversy surrounding the officiating in this game highlights the ongoing debate regarding the impact of referees' decisions on game outcomes.
As the Steelers continue their pursuit of a strong season, they will hope for more favorable officiating in future games to avoid potential setbacks like the one they experienced on Sunday.
