The Pittsburgh Steelers are diligently preparing for their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals, facing some uncertainty on the quarterback front. Kenny Pickett, who has been limited in practice due to an ankle injury, had another restricted session on Wednesday. Coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism about Pickett's progress, stating, "We'll see how his body responds to the work today and make plans for tomorrow accordingly."
However, the team's plan still remains unchanged, with Mason Rudolph expected to start in Saturday's game. Rudolph, who has established strong relationships with his teammates, expressed enthusiasm about finally having the opportunity to lead the team, stating, "You feel like as a third-string quarterback, you're sort of earning your paycheck week to week. And so, I finally get to earn it this week and put my hand in the pile and go fight for victory together."
In addition to the quarterback situation, the Steelers are facing challenges in the safety position. With Minkah Fitzpatrick ruled out due to a knee injury and Damontae Kazee suspended for the remainder of the season, the team will rely on a group effort to replace them. Cornerback Patrick Peterson has stepped in somewhat, expressing his willingness to contribute wherever necessary.
"I felt pretty good, honestly," said Peterson, reflecting on his recent experience playing at safety. "The more reps I get, the more comfortable I'll be." Despite being on the Reserve/Injured List, defensive back Elijah Riley was a full participant in practice on Wednesday, showing promising signs of progress. The Steelers have a 21-day window to determine whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or keep him on the Reserve/Injured List for the rest of the season.
Riley, eager to return to the field and help the team, acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances but believes in divine timing. "The timing of it just works out. I am on the mend, ready to get back to playing. The space is open for me to step up and help this team out," said Riley optimistically.
Looking ahead, the Steelers fans have the opportunity to participate in the final stages of Pro Bowl voting. Voting remains open until December 25th, allowing fans to vote for their favorite players, including those from the Steelers. Various methods of voting are available, including social media platforms such as "X" (formerly Twitter), where fans can use specific hashtags to cast their votes. The votes cast during the final two days will count as double.
As the Steelers navigate their preparations, the team remains focused on overcoming the challenges presented by injuries and suspensions. With the determination of Rudolph at quarterback and the resilience of their defensive backfield, Pittsburgh aims to secure a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals in their upcoming matchup.
