In a recent episode of his Not Just Football podcast, Cam Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers expressed his thoughts on the team's search for a new offensive coordinator. While the decision will not directly impact him as a defensive player, Heyward recognizes that the success of the offense is crucial to achieving team goals, including Super Bowl contention.
Heyward specifically discussed the Steelers' interview with former Atlanta Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith. Heyward praised Smith for his previous success as the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator, where he played a key role in leading the team's top rushing attack and scoring offense in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Heyward highlighted the impressive performances of running back Derrick Henry and quarterback Ryan Tannehill during Smith's tenure.
However, Heyward clarified that contrary to his initial statement, Henry did not win the MVP award during that time. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the recipient of the award. Nonetheless, Heyward acknowledged Smith's ability to produce solid offenses, despite his struggles during his tenure in Atlanta, where the Falcons' scoring offense ranked 26th in two out of three seasons.
Heyward also emphasized the importance of the offensive coordinator possessing experience in the role, which seems to align with Mike Tomlin's priorities in the hiring process. The team's previous coordinators, Randy Fichtner and Matt Canada, had never called plays in the NFL prior to their roles in Pittsburgh.
While Heyward acknowledged that his input will likely be limited to his podcast discussions, he expressed his uncertainty regarding the current status of the Steelers' coordinator search.
The team is currently evaluating multiple candidates, including former Carolina Panthers OC Thomas Brown and Houston Texans QB Coach Jerrod Johnson. With many of the Steelers' staff members involved in various events, such as the Shrine Bowl and Senior Bowl, a final decision is not expected for at least another week.
As the Steelers continue their diligent search for an offensive coordinator, the team's future performance and ultimately, Heyward's pursuit of a Super Bowl ring, will largely depend on the success of the chosen candidate and their ability to propel the offense to new heights.
