In recent days, rumors have been swirling in the NFL about the potential departure of Mike Tomlin as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. After 17 years at the helm, the Steelers' recent struggles have raised questions about Tomlin's future with the team.
The speculation began when NFL insiders Albert Breer and Dianna Russini chimed in on the topic. Breer, appearing on "The Herd" on FS1, acknowledged that while he didn't believe Tomlin would be fired, he could envision a scenario where the coach doesn't return next season. Breer highlighted the connections between Panthers owner David Tepper and Commanders owner Josh Harris, both of whom were previously minority owners of the Steelers. Breer suggested that Tepper and Harris could potentially reach out to Steelers owner Art Rooney to inquire about acquiring Tomlin's services.
Moreover, Breer pointed out that both the Panthers and the Commanders are geographically close to Tomlin's hometown in Virginia, which could be a factor in his decision-making process. Breer concluded that after 17 seasons, it might be time for the Steelers and Tomlin to reset.
Backing up the idea of a potential Tomlin trade, Russini, an NFL insider from The Athletic, noted that Tomlin's contract with the Steelers expires in 2024. She also mentioned the Steelers' policy of not engaging in extension talks during the season, leaving Tomlin's future uncertain. Russini further speculated that the Steelers might consider trading Tomlin to teams like Washington, Chicago, or Carolina in exchange for draft picks. She even suggested the possibility of the New York Jets exploring a move for Tomlin if they have doubts about their current coaching staff.
Aside from the coaching rumors, the Steelers' recent on-field struggles have added fuel to the speculation. In particular, wide receivers Diontae Johnson and George Pickens have faced criticism for apparent lack of effort during critical moments in recent games.
While the discussion surrounding Tomlin's future remains hypothetical at this point, it is clear that doubts have emerged due to the Steelers' disappointing 7-7 record and a three-game losing streak against the Cardinals, Patriots, and Colts.
As the season progresses and the Steelers fight for a playoff spot, all eyes will be on Mike Tomlin to see how he handles the pressure and whether he can turn things around for the storied franchise.
