San Diego State University has announced that Sean Lewis, former offensive coordinator at Colorado and head coach at Kent State, will be taking over as the new head football coach. The decision was confirmed by a source close to the university, with ESPN's Pete Thamel also reporting the impending deal.

At 37 years old, Lewis brings a wealth of coaching experience to his new role. He served as the head coach at Kent State from 2018 to 2022, where he amassed a 24-31 record, with 22 wins in his last three seasons. Lewis was instrumental in implementing Kent State's successful "FlashFAST" offense, which guided the team to two bowl game appearances. Notably, during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, the Golden Flashes averaged an impressive 606.5 yards and 49.8 points per game.

After leaving Kent State in December, Lewis signed on as the offensive coordinator at Colorado under head coach Deion Sanders. Despite losing his play-calling duties earlier this month, Lewis played a significant role in the team's strong offensive performance, helping the Buffaloes score high points in their games.

Lewis's coaching career spans various positions at different universities. Prior to his time at Kent State, he served as co-offensive coordinator at both Syracuse (2016-2017) and Bowling Green (2015). He also worked as a position coach at Eastern Illinois and Akron.

A native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Lewis brings a strong pedigree as a former tight end and kick returner at the University of Wisconsin, where he initially joined the team as a quarterback.

San Diego State's Athletic Director, John David Wicker, conducted an extensive search to find a replacement for former head coach Brady Hoke. The university interviewed several candidates, including Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White, UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, and Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. The latest report from FootballScoop also added Montana State's coach Brent Vigen as another candidate in consideration.

The decision to appoint Sean Lewis as San Diego State's new head football coach reflects the university's commitment to building a strong and competitive program. With Lewis's track record of offensive success and extensive coaching experience, the Aztecs will be looking to make significant strides under his leadership.
