Ryan Grubb has made a decision regarding his coaching future, as he announced on Saturday night that he would not be the next head coach at the University of Washington. Grubb, currently the offensive coordinator for Washington, had been widely considered a top candidate to succeed Kalen DeBoer, who recently left the Huskies to join Alabama as their offensive coordinator.
In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Grubb expressed his disappointment at not being able to take on the head coaching position at Washington. He stated, "Though I wanted to be, I will not be the next head coach at the University of Washington. It would have been a dream to stay here and fight to maintain the standard that had been re-established."
Grubb's decision has now fueled speculations about Washington's next move, as it appears increasingly likely that the athletic director, Troy Dannen, will look for an external hire to fill the coaching position left vacant by DeBoer.
However, it has been reported by ESPN that Grubb is expected to join DeBoer at Alabama and become the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator. This move to Tuscaloosa means that Alabama will get Grubb as their offensive coordinator a year later than initially planned. Grubb had already interviewed for the position after the 2022 season but had decided to stay in Seattle for another year. Ultimately, the Tide hired Tommy Rees from Notre Dame as their offensive coordinator.
Grubb has a long-standing working relationship with DeBoer, dating back to their days at the NAIA-level Sioux Falls. Together, they enjoyed tremendous success as Grubb served as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator while DeBoer was the head coach. The duo continued to work together at Fresno State and Eastern Michigan before reuniting at Washington.
At Alabama, Grubb will have the opportunity to showcase his coaching prowess in an offense that boasts a wealth of talent, despite some departures via the transfer portal. With dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe at his disposal, known for his exceptional deep passing skills, Grubb's offensive prowess will align well with the vertical pass concepts previously seen at Washington under the guidance of DeBoer and Grubb. Notably, Washington's former starting quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., threw for over 9,000 yards during his tenure, finishing as the 2023 Heisman runner-up.
While Grubb's departure is undoubtedly a loss for Washington, his decision to join the Crimson Tide serves as a testament to the coaching talent that DeBoer and Grubb possess. It remains to be seen who Washington's next head coach will be, as the search for DeBoer's replacement continues.
