Already in the market for a new coordinator, the Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin could be facing significant changes to their coaching staff this offseason. According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Steelers insider Gerry Dulac, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin's contract is set to expire after the 2023 season, leaving his future with the team uncertain.

The Steelers named Austin as their defensive coordinator on February 9, 2022, following the retirement of Keith Butler. Prior to taking on the coordinator role, Austin had been with the Steelers since 2019 as a defensive assistant, primarily working with the secondary and assisting Tomlin with in-game decisions.

While Pittsburgh typically hires position coaches to two-year contracts and coordinators to three-year deals, the progression of Austin from a position coach to coordinator has made it difficult to determine his current contract status. Dulac's belief that Austin's contract expires at the end of this season raises the question of whether the Steelers will choose to renew his contract or pursue other options.

Austin has made positive contributions as the defensive coordinator, helping the Steelers generate turnovers and maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks, while also strengthening their red zone defense. However, the team has struggled with injuries and allowed a significant number of yards this season.

Dulac also revealed that changes are expected throughout the Steelers' coaching staff, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. With the recent hiring of a new offensive coordinator, there may be further changes made to positions such as wide receivers coach, offensive line coach, and potentially even the interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The Steelers are in a period of evaluation and tough decision-making, both in terms of their roster and coaching staff. The struggles experienced in professional sports often result in a need for a fresh approach and a renewed sense of direction. As the 2023 season draws to a close, Steelers fans can expect changes to be made in an effort to restore the team's performance and set them on a path to success once again.
