The Philadelphia Eagles have made it official, announcing the appointment of Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator. The decision comes after reports circulating on Wednesday confirmed that Fangio was their desired candidate for the position.
In a statement released by Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, he expressed his excitement about having Fangio join the team. Sirianni praised Fangio's extensive coaching experience and described him as a brilliant defensive mind. He also emphasized the opportunity for the coaches and players to learn from Fangio's vast knowledge of the game, passion, and work ethic.
This isn't the first time the Eagles pursued Fangio as their defensive coordinator. Last year, when seeking a replacement for Jonathan Gannon, they ultimately chose Sean Desai, who later demoted to promote Matt Patricia. Fangio, however, joined the Miami Dolphins instead. Now, after just one year in Miami, Fangio is returning to his home state of Pennsylvania to take on the role.
Fangio brings an impressive track record with him. His previous defenses have achieved notable rankings in various metrics. For instance, during his tenure with the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2018, his defenses ranked as high as 1st in DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average). Overall, his experience includes coaching stints with the Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Carolina Panthers.
The Eagles are looking to Fangio to bolster their defense, which underperformed in the 2023 season. They ranked 29th in DVOA, 29th in EPA (Expected Points Added) per play, and 30th in opponent offensive points per game. Fangio's expertise, combined with improved personnel provided by General Manager Howie Roseman, is expected to elevate the defense's performance.
Realistically, the Eagles aim to raise the defense's floor from being one of the bottom-five units to a level of competency. Paired with their already high-level offense, this formula has the potential to put the Eagles back in championship contention.
Fangio's hiring has received positive praise, considering his esteemed reputation as one of the most influential defensive minds in the NFL. Coaches like Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Matt LaFleur have previously acknowledged Fangio as the most challenging defensive coordinator to read and attack.
Unlike the situation with Desai, who had limited play-calling experience, the Eagles can entrust Fangio to run the defense without constant supervision or interference. This presents an opportunity for defensive continuity, as Fangio is unlikely to attract head coaching interest following his unsuccessful stint with the Denver Broncos.
However, some concerns remain regarding Fangio's departure from the Miami Dolphins after just one season, as well as the reported dissatisfaction from some players. Additionally, it is worth considering whether Fangio's defensive preferences have been adapted by opposing teams as his system's influence grows throughout the league.
Nevertheless, the consensus is that the Eagles made the right choice by hiring Fangio. His arrival in Philadelphia brings optimism for an improved defense and potential championship aspirations. Welcome back to Philly, Vic Fangio!
