Penn State's senior point guard, Ace Baldwin Jr., continues to prove his worth as one of the most dynamic players in the Big Ten conference. With impressive stats in scoring, assists, and steals, Baldwin Jr. is leaving his mark on the court.
Currently, Baldwin Jr. averages 13.2 points per game, 5.1 assists per contest, and a remarkable 2.86 steals per game, leading the Big Ten in steals. His 2.86 steals per game also rank sixth in the nation, showcasing his defensive prowess. With career marks of 1,107 points, 523 assists, and 243 steals, Baldwin Jr. is on track to become one of the few active Division I players with 1,000+ points, 500+ assists, and 250+ steals.
In Penn State's recent road victory against Rutgers, Baldwin Jr. delivered an exceptional performance. He notched 15 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals, becoming the first Big Ten player in over a decade to accomplish such a feat.
Baldwin Jr.'s accomplishments this season are truly remarkable. He is the first Big Ten player since the 1997-98 season to have a 25+ point game, a 13+ assist game, and an 8+ steal game in a single season, following in the footsteps of Michigan State's Mateen Cleaves.
Joining Baldwin Jr. in making an impact for Penn State is sophomore guard Kanye Clary. Clary has seen the second-highest increase in points per game among Division I players compared to last season. His scoring production has improved by an impressive 14.7 points per game, trailing only Xavier Johnson from SIU.
Despite limited minutes as a freshman, Clary has emerged as a scoring force, averaging 18.4 points per game, the highest output by any power conference player standing under six feet tall this season. He currently ranks fifth among sophomores in scoring and fifth in points per game in the Big Ten.
Another player who has stepped up for Penn State recently is Nick Kern Jr. In the last eight games, Kern Jr. has scored in double figures six times, averaging 11.1 points per game. He has been efficient, shooting an impressive 57.9% from the field during that stretch.
Looking at Penn State's overall performance, the team has shown strengths in different areas. They excel in taking care of the ball with a low turnover rate of 15.3%, and they force a good number of turnovers with a 12.8% steal percentage. However, they struggle with offensive rebounds, ranking 240th in offensive rebound rate.
On the defensive end, Penn State needs to improve, as opponents have an effective field goal percentage of 50.9% against them. Teams have found success scoring inside against Penn State, with 54.8% of opponent's points coming from two-pointers.
Overall, Penn State is building a competitive team led by the exceptional play of Ace Baldwin Jr. and the emergence of players like Kanye Clary and Nick Kern Jr. As they continue to develop and improve, they will be a team to watch in the Big Ten conference.
