Penn State University announced on Sunday that offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich will no longer be with the team. The decision followed a lackluster offensive performance in a 24-15 home loss to Michigan, where the Nittany Lions managed only 238 yards of offense, including a meager 74 yards through the air.
This disappointing outcome mirrored Penn State's struggles in their earlier matchup against Ohio State on October 21, where they were defeated 20-12. In that game, the Nittany Lions mustered 240 yards of offense, with slightly more success in the passing game, accumulating 191 yards. This season has showcased two different sides of the Penn State offense, with impressive averages of 413.3 yards and 43.8 points per game in wins, but only 239 yards and 13.5 points in losses against the Buckeyes and Wolverines.
Head coach James Franklin provided a statement expressing gratitude to Yurcich for his contributions over the past three years but emphasized the need for change at this time. The university wished Yurcich and his family the best for their future endeavors.
Yurcich joined Penn State in 2021 after serving as the offensive coordinator at Texas. His previous experience includes a stint as the quarterbacks coach at Ohio State and a successful six-season run as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.
Penn State football has seen a high turnover of offensive coordinators under Coach Franklin, with Yurcich marking the sixth since his arrival. The first coordinator, John Donovan from Vanderbilt, lasted only two seasons before being replaced by Joe Moorhead, who achieved two successful seasons before accepting a position at Mississippi State. Since Moorhead's departure, the Nittany Lions have struggled to find the same level of success with Ricky Rahne, Kirk Ciarrocca, and now Yurcich.
Moving forward, co-offensive coordinators Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle will take on the responsibility of reinvigorating the Penn State offense, assuming play-calling duties for the remainder of the season. The Nittany Lions will face Rutgers at home in Week 12 before concluding their season with a road game against Michigan State.
As Penn State looks to reignite their offensive prowess, the coaching staff hopes that the change in leadership will prove fruitful as they work towards finishing the season on a strong note.
