The New England Patriots have made a significant decision regarding their defensive coaching staff. Multiple reports confirm that the team will be promoting DeMarcus Covington, their defensive line coach, to the position of defensive coordinator.
Speculation about Covington's promotion began when it was reported that the Patriots had started informing other candidates that the decision had been made. According to sources, all signs point to Covington stepping into the role, with an official announcement expected early next week.
The Patriots' defense has been a strong point for the team in recent seasons, and Covington played a crucial role in maintaining its high level of performance. Despite several injuries, including to standout player Matthew Judon, the veteran group led by Covington continued to excel and set the tone on the field. In fact, last season the Patriots' defense ranked eighth in EPA (Expected Points Added), ninth in DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), and 15th in points allowed.
Covington's reputation as a rising star among coaches has been further solidified by his experience coordinating one of the defenses at the Senior Bowl. Under his guidance, the Patriots' defensive line has become one of the team's most consistent units. In terms of run defense, they finished second overall in EPA and third in DVOA. Covington's coaching has also played a part in the breakout performances of players like Christian Barmore and Anfernee Jennings, as well as the strong seasons of Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, and Deatrich Wise in the trenches.
This decision to promote Covington represents the first major shakeup since the appointment of head coach Jerod Mayo. The continuity that Covington will provide is seen as a positive development. However, questions remain regarding the rest of the defensive staff and how they will be filled out under Covington and Mayo's leadership.
Previously, Mayo and Steve Belichick had worked together to coordinate and call the defense. Now, with Mayo assuming the head coaching role, Covington is expected to take over the play-calling duties. Steve Belichick, who is already an experienced coach working with multiple position groups, has the flexibility to potentially take on a new role within the coaching staff. The statuses of Steve and Brian Belichick, as well as cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino, are yet to be clarified.
With uncertainty surrounding Bill Belichick's future as a coach, there is a possibility that more of the defensive staff will return to New England. In any case, the presence of Mayo and Covington ensures that the core elements that have made the Patriots' defense consistently strong will remain intact for the upcoming season.
