In a surprising turn of events, the New England Patriots are reportedly considering trading their No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. According to sources, the Patriots are open to exploring the possibility of finding their future franchise quarterback through free agency instead. ESPN's Dan Graziano revealed that "people around the league" believe that the Patriots are actively seeking potential trade partners for their valuable selection.
Two teams that have emerged as potential trade partners for the Patriots are the Atlanta Falcons, who hold the No. 8 overall pick, and the Minnesota Vikings, who have the No. 11 overall pick. If a trade were to materialize, it would not be unprecedented. Historically, teams in that pick range have traded up to the No. 3 spot to secure a quarterback. In 2018, the New York Jets made a similar move, giving up multiple picks to select Sam Darnold at No. 3.
This decision holds significant importance as it marks the first major move for Eliot Wolf, the Patriots' newly appointed chief decision-maker for the roster. Although Wolf has extensive experience in high-ranking executive roles with the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns, where trades down were infrequent, this scenario presents a unique challenge as he reportedly holds the final say in this instance.
The Patriots have several enticing quarterback prospects available for selection with the No. 3 overall pick. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels have all been projected as top-three picks in this year's draft. However, the Patriots also have numerous other pressing needs that could be addressed by trading down and acquiring additional draft capital.
Looking at recent trade packages, a potential move by the Vikings to the No. 3 spot could mirror the San Francisco 49ers' trade in 2021. The 49ers traded the No. 12 overall pick along with two future first-round picks and a third-round pick to secure the third overall selection and draft Trey Lance. Such a package could be appealing to the Patriots, who currently hold only seven picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, with one pick in each round.
Alternatively, the Patriots could explore the free-agent market to fill their quarterback void. Notable options expected to become available in March include Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, Ryan Tannehill, Gardner Minshew, and Jacoby Brissett. Among them, Brissett stands out as a potential fit given his prior experience with the Patriots and his familiarity with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt from their time together with the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 NFL season.
As the Patriots continue to weigh their options, the fate of the No. 3 overall pick remains uncertain. The coming months will be crucial for the team's decision-making process, as they navigate the potential trade market and evaluate their options in free agency. Patriots fans and football enthusiasts will eagerly await the outcome, as the team aims to make the right choice for their future success.
