In a strategic move to bolster their offensive staff, the New England Patriots have reportedly hired former New York Giants head coach and offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. According to sources, McAdoo will take on the role of offensive assistant and will directly work with the team's new offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt.
McAdoo's addition brings valuable experience and expertise to newly appointed head coach Jerod Mayo's coaching staff. Notably, there is existing familiarity between McAdoo and Van Pelt, as both previously worked together in the Green Bay Packers organization. McAdoo served as the Packers quarterbacks coach during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, while Van Pelt worked as the running backs coach at the same time.
Interestingly, these years in Green Bay also coincide with Eliot Wolf's tenure with the Packers. Wolf, who now holds a position in the Patriots' front office, appears to play a significant role in decision-making for the team. The Patriots recently added Jerry Montgomery, former Packers defensive line coach, who also worked with Wolf during his time in Green Bay.
McAdoo's coaching career showcases his versatile expertise. He started as the Packers tight ends coach from 2006 to 2011, before transitioning to quarterbacks coach from 2012 to 2013. In 2014, he accepted the position of offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, where the team finished 19th and 16th in points during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Impressively, McAdoo then took over as the Giants' head coach in 2016, leading the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. However, the following season proved to be tumultuous, resulting in McAdoo's dismissal after a 2-10 start. His decision to bench quarterback Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith drew heavy criticism from fans and media alike.
Since then, McAdoo has worked as the quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, as a consultant with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, and as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2022. His vast experience and knowledge of offensive schemes make him a valuable addition to the Patriots' coaching staff.
With McAdoo's appointment as an offensive assistant, the Patriots now boast a team with two veteran offensive coordinators. As the team continues to shape their coaching staff under Mayo's leadership, it wouldn't be surprising to see additional seasoned coaches join the ranks.
Rumors have circulated that the Patriots have their sights set on former Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson. Additionally, the team recently lost running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri, who accepted a position at the University of Washington.
As the Patriots gear up for the upcoming season, the hiring of Ben McAdoo demonstrates their commitment to assembling a strong coaching staff that will contribute to their offensive success on the field.
