In an emotional interview set to air on Monday, Olympic icon Mary Lou Retton revealed the gravity of the health crisis she faced in late 2021. Speaking with "Today," Retton discussed her diagnosis of a rare form of pneumonia and the challenging journey to recovery.
Expressing her gratitude for being alive, Retton shared with "Today's" Hoda Kotb, "This is serious, and this is life, and I'm so grateful to be here. I am blessed to be here because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support."
The five-time Olympic medalist now relies on a portable oxygen tank to assist her lungs, a vulnerable state that Retton admits leaves her feeling apprehensive. Her family chronicled her difficult battle against the illness, with a particularly bleak period that had her "fighting for her life."
On October 31, Retton took to Instagram to address her concerned fans, assuring them that the worst was over. She wrote, "I'm beyond blessed to have the opportunity to make this statement. I am overwhelmed with the love and support from the world as I fight. I am forever grateful to you all! I'm with family continuing to slowly recover and staying very positive as I know this recovery is a long and slow process."
Retton's daughter revealed that the Olympian experienced a frightening setback while in intensive care. However, upon her release, Retton will embark on a recovery journey marked by "baby steps."
Mary Lou Retton rose to fame as "America's sweetheart" during the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, where she won a historic gold medal. At just 16 years old, Retton captivated the world by achieving perfect 10s in the floor exercise and vault, becoming the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title. In total, she secured five medals, including one gold, two silver, and two bronze.
Following her retirement from gymnastics, Retton transitioned to become a motivational speaker and advocate for proper nutrition and exercise. She also served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under former President George W. Bush.
