### Renowned Sports Science Host John Brenkus Dies at 53

John Brenkus, celebrated TV producer and creator of ESPN's Emmy-winning series Sports Science, passed away on May 31 at the age of 53, his family confirmed. The announcement, which appeared on Brenkus' Brinx.tv homepage, revealed that he had been battling depression. "John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31, 2025," the family's statement disclosed.

The family expressed their heartbreak and requested privacy during this difficult time, urging anyone struggling with depression to seek support. Brenkus, who co-founded Base Productions, found success by co-creating and hosting Sports Science. The show premiered in 2007 on Fox Sports Network, then moved to ESPN, where it captivated audiences by uncovering the scientific principles behind athletic performance.

In addition to his television work, Brenkus authored a book in 2010 titled "The Perfection Point: Sport Science Predicts the Fastest Man, the Highest Jump, and the Limits of Athletic Performance." His influence extended beyond the screen and pages as he was also a sought-after public speaker.

However, despite his professional accomplishments, Brenkus revealed his personal struggles with mental health. He sold Sports Science to ESPN and later shared with Marcellus Wiley in a 2013 interview that he had experienced a deep depression, nearly leading him to take his own life.

Base Productions, the company Brenkus founded with Marty Stern, produced a variety of unscripted TV series, such as Alaska Marshals, Haunted Highway, Natural Medicine Saved My Life, and Do or Die, among others. The news of Brenkus' passing prompted responses from prominent media figures like Marcellus Wiley and ESPN's Adam Schefter. "This is incredibly sad," Schefter wrote on X. "John was so good at what he did. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, John."

The passing of John Brenkus serves as a somber reminder of the quiet struggles that many face and underscores the importance of seeking help in times of mental distress.
