Oklahoma starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel suffered a head injury late in the first half of the No. 14 Sooners' road game on Saturday against BYU. Gabriel's injury forced five-star freshman Jackson Arnold to step in as his replacement for the second half.
Gabriel had an impressive performance in the first half, completing 13-of-21 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. However, his injury left his availability in doubt for the remainder of the game. Gabriel was seen not warming up with the team after halftime.
With Arnold taking over, Oklahoma had to burn his redshirt, as he had already played in four games earlier this season, which was the maximum allowed to preserve his redshirt status. Arnold, a highly-touted recruit who joined the Sooners as a five-star prospect in the 2023 cycle, has shown promise during his limited playing time this season. He has thrown for 169 yards and two touchdowns and has also rushed for 54 yards and two scores.
This is not the first time Gabriel has dealt with a head injury. Last season, during a loss at TCU, he suffered a similar injury, which caused him to miss one start against Texas. Gabriel has been a crucial component of the Sooners' offense this year, surpassing the 3,000-yard mark in Week 11 when he threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns in a home victory against West Virginia.
In the Big 12 standings, Oklahoma is currently tied with several other teams for second place, trailing behind Texas. This game against BYU marks just the third meeting between the two teams, and their first meeting as Big 12 opponents.
As Gabriel's health remains uncertain, all eyes will be on Jackson Arnold as he takes on the responsibility of leading the Oklahoma Sooners in their crucial matchup against BYU. The outcome of this game could have significant implications for the Sooners' standing in the Big 12.
