In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Leigh Hanson, the chief of staff for Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, expressed her disappointment with the lack of communication from the Oakland A's regarding the potential extension of their lease at the Coliseum.
When questioned about ongoing discussions between the city and the A's, Hanson revealed that no such talks had taken place. She went on to criticize the team's "lack of clarity" on their business plans, stating that the city could not be expected to support an organization that did not provide clear direction.
Hanson further expressed her concerns about the financial impact of hosting A's games on the city. In fact, she claimed that a single exhibition soccer game brought in more revenue than the A's did throughout an entire season. This revelation led her to assert that the A's would not be missed by the city.
Responding to these remarks, A's owner, John Fisher, acknowledged the disappointment shared by both fans and the city of Oakland. Fisher claimed that the team had done "everything we could" to resolve the situation amicably. Ultimately, however, Fisher stated that the opportunity to move to Las Vegas was too enticing to pass up.
Although Fisher did not explicitly state that 2024 would be the A's last season in Oakland, the lack of clear direction from the organization leaves the future uncertain. Fisher did emphasize the team's commitment to finding an interim home for the 2025 through 2027 seasons and expressed hope in resolving this matter soon.
With Hanson's critical comments and Fisher's acknowledgment of the team's desire to embrace the move to Las Vegas, the prospect of a future without the A's in Oakland becomes more real. The lack of clear communication and definitive plans only adds to the uncertainty surrounding the team's future.
As the 2024 season approaches, both loyal fans and city officials are left wondering what lies ahead for the Oakland A's.
