In the search for a new offensive coordinator, the New England Patriots have narrowed down their options to six remaining candidates. Among them, Nick Caley, a former Patriots assistant and coach of the Los Angeles Rams' tight ends, has emerged as the top contender, according to a report by the Boston Herald.
Caley has had prior experience with the Patriots organization, having started as an offensive assistant in 2015 after a successful career in college coaching. He quickly climbed the ranks and was promoted to tight ends coach in 2017, a position he held for six years. However, after an unsuccessful bid for the offensive coordinator role in 2023, Caley decided to join the Rams under head coach Sean McVay.
Now, a reunion between Caley and the Patriots seems likely. He has already interviewed twice with the team, including a recent in-person meeting earlier this week. Caley is joined by Luke Getsy, the former offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, who has also flown in for a second interview. These two candidates are the only ones reported to have met twice with the new Patriots head coach, Jerod Mayo, and his supporting staff.
The remaining candidates in the Patriots' search for an offensive coordinator include Tanner Engstrand, the Detroit Lions' pass game coordinator, Klint Kubiak, Brian Fleury, and Scott Turner, who hold positions with the San Francisco 49ers, and Las Vegas Raiders respectively.
Earlier this offseason, the Patriots filled two other coordinator roles by promoting D-line coach DeMarcus Covington to coordinate the defense and hiring ex-Rams special teams assistant Jeremy Springer to coordinate the kicking game.
As the Patriots continue their search for an offensive coordinator, all eyes are on Nick Caley, who appears to be in a prime position to take on the role and reunite with the team that he is familiar with. Only time will tell if he will ultimately be chosen to lead the Patriots offense in the upcoming season.
