Sunday's heated sideline incident during the 49ers-Eagles game resulted in the ejections of 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro. The NFL has stated that the matter is currently under review and potential discipline for the Eagles and DiSandro is being considered.

The incident, captured on video, showed DiSandro positioned in the white border between the playing field and the sideline. According to the NFL rulebook, only the chain crew, game officials, and players directly involved in the game should be present in that area. As such, DiSandro's presence in the white stripe was deemed a violation.

This incident gains significance in light of two memos sent by the league during the 2023 season. On October 18, the NFL distributed a memo addressing the increase in fighting both before and during games. The memo explicitly stated that any club personnel involved in a fight would face accountability measures and potential penalties, including fines and/or suspension without pay.

Additionally, a September 13 memo focused on the conduct of non-player personnel. The memo emphasized that non-player personnel must refrain from unnecessary physical contact, abusive language, or gestures directed at opponents, game officials, or league representatives. Violations before, during, or after a game could result in disqualification and disciplinary action by the Commissioner.

In the case of DiSandro, his involvement in attempting to separate Greenlaw from Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith led to Greenlaw throwing a punch. While some may argue that DiSandro's intentions were to calm the situation, others contend that his actions instigated the incident that ultimately led to Greenlaw's ejection.

Sources familiar with the situation also revealed that the league office had communicated with both teams ahead of the game, expressing concerns regarding potential incidents between them. Although the NFL did not confirm these specific communications, it is common for the league to have pre-game discussions with clubs.

The final outcome of this incident remains uncertain. Some argue that a severe penalty is necessary to deter non-players from engaging in similar conduct in the future. The Eagles, on the other hand, would prefer clear guidelines going forward to avoid such situations altogether.

The NFL's response might be simple, as the purpose of the aforementioned memos was to address such misconduct and maintain a high standard of conduct on and off the field. As the investigation continues, the league will carefully assess all aspects before determining the appropriate course of action.
