In a recent survey conducted by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), players were asked to rate the performance of their coordinators, and the results have unveiled the top-rated coordinators in the league. The survey, which was commissioned by the union and conducted by a research firm, received responses from a substantial number of players across offensive, defensive, and special teams units.
Among the offensive coordinators, Dolphins' Frank Smith emerged as the top choice. Smith, currently in his second season in Miami, has garnered praise from 864 offensive players who participated in the survey. Close behind Smith were Carolina's Thomas Brown, Dallas's Brian Schottenheimer, Cincinnati's Brian Callahan, and the Chargers' Kellen Moore.
On the defensive side of the ball, Lions' Aaron Glenn claimed the top spot among defensive coordinators. The survey received responses from 774 defensive players, with Glenn earning high marks for his performance during his third season in Detroit. Following Glenn were San Francisco's Steve Wilks, Dallas's Dan Quinn, Minnesota's Brian Flores, and the Rams' Raheem Morris.
In the realm of special teams, Cowboys' John Fassel stood out as the top choice among special teams coordinators. Fassel, who is currently in his fourth season in Dallas, received accolades from 1,025 special teams players who participated in the survey. Carolina's Chris Tabor, now promoted to the Panthers' interim head coach, ranked second, followed by Minnesota's Matt Daniels, Detroit's Dave Fipp, and New Orleans' Darren Rizzi.
The NFLPA survey holds significant weight as it serves as a seal of approval from the players, demonstrating their level of satisfaction and support for the coaching they receive. The positive ratings of these coordinators will likely boost their chances of being considered for upcoming head-coaching vacancies in the league.
As the NFL playoffs approach and teams start their search for new leadership, the performances of these highly-rated coordinators will undoubtedly draw the attention of team owners and general managers. Their proven ability to connect with and motivate players, as reflected in the survey results, will position them as strong candidates for head coaching roles in the weeks ahead.
The survey reflects the importance of players' perspectives in evaluating and endorsing coaching staff. With the seal of approval from their own union, these coordinators have solidified their standing as valued leaders in the NFL.
