In a season marred by disappointment and struggling quarterbacks, NFL legend Joe Theismann believes it's time for the New England Patriots and the New York Jets to explore new options at the quarterback position. Both Mac Jones of the Patriots and Zach Wilson of the Jets were highly touted first-round draft picks in 2021, but three seasons later, their progress has been underwhelming.

During a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Theismann expressed his concerns about Jones' performance. The former Washington legend and Super Bowl champion noted that Jones often makes questionable throws, lacking comfort in the pocket and displaying inaccurate passes. Theismann emphasized the importance of decisiveness in the quarterback position, which he believes Jones lacks.

Jones was benched for the fourth time this season and the second consecutive game during the Patriots' recent loss to the New York Giants. The young quarterback finished the game with a disappointing 12 of 21 for 89 yards and two interceptions. With 12 turnovers and only 10 touchdowns through Week 12, Theismann suggested that the Patriots should consider using their first-round pick in the upcoming draft to select a new signal-caller.

However, Theismann's critique didn't stop at the Patriots. He also expressed concerns about the Jets' quarterback situation. Theismann highlighted the struggles of Zach Wilson, who has failed to find his rhythm in the NFL despite high expectations. The rookie quarterback, once again benched in favor of Tim Boyle during the Jets' recent loss to the Miami Dolphins, has been unable to showcase the accuracy and growth in decision-making that Theismann had hoped to see.

Theismann even went as far as pointing out that the Jets will eventually need to find a replacement for Aaron Rodgers, who will return next year but is approaching the end of his career. The former quarterback stressed the need for someone experienced and capable of taking charge on the field, expressing doubts about the readiness of young quarterbacks who have only played for a year.

For now, the Jets have chosen to stick with Boyle as their starter, a decision supported by Theismann. However, the Patriots' quarterback situation remains uncertain. With each passing week, their playoff hopes continue to fade, prompting Theismann and others to urge the team to address their quarterback crisis sooner rather than later.

As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, both the Patriots and the Jets may need to prioritize the quarterback position in order to secure a promising future for their respective franchises.
