The 2023 NFL regular season has come to a close, but the action is far from over. As 18 of the league's 32 teams bid farewell to their playoff dreams, attention now turns to the coaching carousel. The offseason has brought about the dismissal of several head coaches, leaving seven vacancies waiting to be filled.
The Carolina Panthers, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Los Angeles Chargers were among the teams that fired their coaches midseason. The Panthers made headlines by parting ways with Frank Reich on November 27, making him the first coach to be fired after just 11 games since Pete McCulley with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978. Reich's tenure was marred by a 1-10 start and a dismal 2-15 record for the season, ending with the league's worst scoring offense anchored by rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
The Raiders made their move on Halloween, bidding farewell to Josh McDaniels after a 3-5 start. McDaniels struggled to maintain the support of his players, leading to a reported locker room divide. The team finished under the guidance of interim coach Antonio Pierce, posting a 5-4 record and the fewest points allowed per game in the league during that period.
The Chargers followed suit in December, relieving Brandon Staley of his duties after a disappointing 5-9 start. Staley's final game saw a devastating 63-21 loss, with quarterback Justin Herbert sidelined due to injury. The Chargers ranked 28th in both scoring and total defense under Staley, a far cry from his previous success as a defensive coordinator with the Rams.
Adding to the list of coaching vacancies are the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks. The Falcons dismissed Arthur Smith after three consecutive seasons with a 7-10 record, marking the first time in franchise history that a head coach lost 10 games in three straight seasons. The Commanders moved on from Ron Rivera after a disappointing 4-13 season, with the team's defense performing poorly throughout the year.
The Titans made a surprising decision by firing Mike Vrabel, despite four consecutive winning seasons. However, the team's recent 13-21 record cast doubt on Vrabel's leadership. The Seahawks announced that Pete Carroll would transition to an advisory role after two non-playoff seasons, leaving the top coaching job vacant.
Looking ahead, two additional teams could potentially join the coaching carousel. The New England Patriots, who saw a decline in performance under Bill Belichick since quarterback Tom Brady's departure, might be considering a change. The Chicago Bears may also be in the market for a new head coach if they decide to move on from Matt Eberflus, whose tenure has resulted in a 10-24 record.
As the NFL enters the offseason, these coaching vacancies present an opportunity for new leadership and fresh strategies. With a history of frequent turnover in head coaching positions, the league is bound to see some exciting changes in the coming months.
