In a surprising move, the New York Islanders have announced the firing of coach Lane Lambert, as revealed by Lou Lamoriello, the president of hockey operations and general manager. The decision comes amidst a struggling season for the Islanders, who have faced a string of inconsistent performances as of late.

The final blow came with their 4-3 overtime loss to the 31st-ranked Hawks on Friday, pushing Lamoriello to take action. With a record of 2-6-2 in their last 10 games, the Islanders' playoff hopes were at stake, sitting sixth in the Metro and 11th in the East, merely two points behind a playoff spot. However, Lamoriello remains optimistic that the season can be turned around.

Taking the reins as the Islanders' new coach is none other than Patrick Roy, a four-time Stanley Cup champion and esteemed Hall-of-Fame goaltender. Roy, who has been eager to return to an NHL bench since his departure from the Colorado Avalanche in 2016, brings a wealth of experience and success to the team.

Despite previously serving as coach and general manager of the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, Roy's appointment may come as a surprise, as Lamoriello typically relies on his own network of former players and associates when selecting coaches. This was the case when he hired Barry Trotz in 2018, and now, with Roy, Lamoriello aims to inject the team with new energy and direction.

Roy notably had two coaching stints with the Remparts from 2005 to 2013 and again from 2018 to 2023. During the 2022-23 season, he led the Remparts to their third Memorial Cup title, marking a successful achievement before stepping down as coach and GM.

From 2013 to 2016, Roy served as the coach of the Colorado Avalanche, where he posted a record of 130-92-24. His tenure saw the team make the playoffs once, during the 2013-2014 season. However, Roy resigned on August 11, 2016, ultimately paving the way for Jared Bednar to take over as the team's current coach.

As a player, Roy is widely regarded as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. With an impressive career spanning 19 seasons, including 11 with the Montreal Canadiens and 8 with the Avalanche, Roy secured two Stanley Cups with each franchise. His remarkable achievements also include being the only player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy three times.

In his tenure with the Islanders, Lambert, 59, left his mark, with a record of 61-46-20 over 127 games. His departure sets the stage for a new chapter under the guidance of Patrick Roy, as the team looks to revive their playoff ambitions and make a push for success in the remaining games of the season.
