The New Orleans Saints have bolstered their pass rush by signing veteran defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to their practice squad. The 34-year-old, who has not played in a game this season, most recently showcased his skills with the Baltimore Ravens in the previous season, recording three sacks in 14 games.
The Saints' defensive unit has been actively seeking reinforcement for their struggling pass rush, which currently ranks 26th in the NFL with just 18 sacks this season. In their pursuit of enhancing the team's defensive capabilities, the Saints recently inked defensive end Jordan Willis to their practice squad. However, additional support was still required to amplify the effectiveness of their pass rush.
With the defensive ends on the team contributing a combined total of 7 sacks, the acquisition of Pierre-Paul adds valuable experience and production to the line. The Saints' second-round draft pick, Isaiah Foskey, is currently sidelined due to an injury and has yet to register a sack so far this season.
Within the Saints' defensive unit, Carl Granderson has been the standout performer with 5.5 sacks, but he has experienced a dip in production, managing only one sack in the past four games. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Cameron Jordan has contributed two sacks to the team's overall tally.
Jason Pierre-Paul, a highly regarded pass-rusher and a former first-round pick for the New York Giants in 2010, brings a wealth of experience and accolades to the Saints' defense. He is a three-time Pro Bowler, having most recently earned the honor in 2020 while representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout his career, Pierre-Paul has accumulated an impressive total of 94.5 sacks, with 5.5 sacks in the past two seasons split between the Ravens and Buccaneers.
The Saints are optimistic that the addition of Pierre-Paul to their practice squad will provide a significant boost to their pass rush as they aim to improve their defensive performance and position themselves as formidable contenders in the NFL.
