As the 2023 NFL trade deadline approaches, the New England Patriots find themselves in an unfamiliar position with a 1-5 record. Rumblings around the National Football League suggest that the Patriots may consider becoming sellers rather than buyers, leading to speculation about potential trade chips within their roster.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, league executives have expressed curiosity about several players on the Patriots' roster who could be valuable trade assets. However, it seems that teams are divided on whether the Patriots would actually part ways with these players. One league executive noted that the Patriots are a team that often declares players as available, only to retract their decision later.

It comes as no surprise that head coach Bill Belichick, known for his competitiveness both on and off the field, would adopt a similar approach in trade negotiations. Nevertheless, it is rare for the Patriots to find themselves in such a predicament leading up to the trade deadline. Throughout the Tom Brady era, the team had typically been focused on either making acquisitions or maintaining their roster status quo. This is perhaps the first time since Belichick's inaugural season in 2000 that a major selling spree seems plausible.

The players garnering interest from other teams ahead of the trade deadline include linebacker Josh Uche, safety Kyle Dugger, and offensive lineman Michael Onwenu. These young players have already showcased their talent in the NFL and are currently in the final year of their contracts. Additionally, defensive tackle Christian Barmore has also captured attention, although he still has one more year under team control before reaching free agency.

Another player mentioned in Fowler's report is wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. Despite playing in an underperforming offense, Bourne has had a solid season. While there is a possibility that the Patriots could receive trade offers for Bourne, the current sentiment is that little movement is expected in that regard.

In terms of future planning, it would be in the Patriots' best interest to consider extending the contracts of Barmore, Dugger, and Onwenu rather than trade them away, especially if Belichick intends to remain with the team beyond 2023.

Uche, on the other hand, has not perfectly fit the mold of what the Patriots typically desire in outside linebackers. However, he has proven himself as a capable pass-rusher who could excel in a more aggressive defensive system. If Belichick remains in control of personnel decisions in 2024, it might be more consistent with his approach to extend Anfernee Jennings rather than Uche.

While it is clear that Belichick aims to field the best possible team and win games, especially if he is coaching to save his job, one cannot ignore the cost of pushing for just a few additional wins. Despite their poor performance and coaching struggles, the Patriots do have favorable matchups against the Commanders, Colts, Steelers, Giants, and Broncos in the near future. Yet, winning these games would ultimately be meaningless and could diminish their draft capital, which is much needed for building a stronger future team.

Therefore, it would be frustrating for fans and observers alike if Belichick chooses to abstain from accepting acceptable trade deals for players who are generating genuine interest in the market. In doing so, he would prioritize his own interests over the long-term success of the team. It is crucial for Belichick to make decisions that set the Patriots up for a better future rather than solely focusing on the present, where victories seem increasingly futile.
