In a recent press conference following the Pittsburgh Steelers' wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Mike Tomlin expressed confidence that he will be returning to the team next season and anticipates receiving a contract extension. After rumors swirled about his potential departure after the 2023 season, Tomlin laughed off the speculation and affirmed his commitment to coaching.

Tomlin, who signed a three-year contract extension in 2021, is currently tied to the Steelers through the 2024 season. He emphasized his good relationship with team owner Art Rooney II and expects contract negotiations to proceed smoothly. While Tomlin acknowledged that he could have handled the postgame press conference situation better, he maintained that contract discussions should not be addressed in that setting.

As he enters his 18th season as head coach, Tomlin remains steadfast in his belief that he is the right person to lead the Steelers. Despite the team's playoff drought since 2016, he expressed confidence in his ability to get the job done and a desire to bring confetti for the team's success.

Regarding his future plans, Tomlin explained that he evaluates his coaching career on a yearly basis but remains focused on his daily responsibilities. He stressed the importance of earning respect and constantly working with urgency, stating that his mindset has not changed over the years. Tomlin's experience and "go" mentality further solidify his belief in his own ability to lead the team to success.

While the contract extension is important, particularly for candidates for the vacant offensive coordinator position, Tomlin downplayed its urgency. He indicated that having fewer questions from the media about his future would be a positive aspect of the extension, but it is not a top priority for him.

In terms of the team's coaching staff, Tomlin revealed plans to make an outside hire for the offensive coordinator position. Eddie Faulkner and Mike Sullivan, who shared coordinator duties after the midseason firing of Matt Canada, will not resume those roles for the upcoming season. Tomlin emphasized the need for versatility and dynamism in the offensive game plan, aiming to utilize the team's talent and keep opposing defenses off-balance.

Although an outside hire is expected for offensive coordinator, Tomlin confirmed that the starting quarterback for the 2024 season is already within the organization. He showed confidence in Kenny Pickett, committing to him resuming his starting role, but noted that competition will be present. Mason Rudolph, the backup quarterback who delivered solid performances towards the end of the season, is set to be a free agent. However, Tomlin expressed a desire to bring him back and praised his preparedness and capabilities in challenging circumstances.

As Tomlin's contract extension discussions progress, Steelers fans eagerly anticipate the team's plans for the future. With a focus on offensive improvements and a competitive quarterback situation, the team aims to bounce back and make a strong comeback in the upcoming season.
