ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan football program finds itself under scrutiny once again as it faces an NCAA investigation into alleged violations of the in-person scouting rule. Staffer Connor Stalions has been suspended with pay after being identified as a central figure in the investigation. Stalions is accused of purchasing tickets to games involving at least five of Michigan's opponents during the past three seasons.

While buying tickets to Big Ten football games is not a violation of NCAA rules, using those tickets to scout other teams is strictly prohibited. The NCAA forbids "off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents," and taping signals is also against the NCAA football playing rules.

Concerns arose when a pattern emerged in Stalions' ticket purchases, with seats near midfield and a clear view of the sideline. The Athletic and other outlets reported that one of the schools involved has security footage showing an individual, potentially Stalions, filming the team's sideline with a smartphone.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who had recently spoken about setting a "gold standard" for rules compliance, released a statement denying knowledge or involvement in any off-campus scouting assignment. The investigation is ongoing, and the NCAA will focus on determining whether Stalions paid for the tickets himself or received assistance from other sources.

While the evidence presented so far is not conclusive, it has raised suspicions among other Big Ten schools. Questions are being raised as to why Michigan did not identify and address potential red flags earlier. The program had recently faced NCAA scrutiny over alleged violations during the COVID-19 dead period, making it crucial for Michigan to maintain a spotless record.

Michigan, known for its success in the Big Ten with 20 consecutive victories, has relied on talented players like Aidan Hutchinson, Blake Corum, and J.J. McCarthy for their success on the field. The alleged actions of a staffer should not overshadow the team's achievements.

This is not the first time that Harbaugh's program has faced controversy. Prior to this investigation, co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss was fired in January amid a police investigation into suspicious computer activity at Schembechler Hall.

NCAA rules hold head coaches accountable for the actions of their programs, so even if Harbaugh was unaware, there could still be repercussions for the football program. Harbaugh acknowledged the need for new policies to protect himself and his staff upon returning from his previous suspension.

It remains to be seen how this investigation will unfold, but the potential fallout could further compound Michigan's NCAA troubles and place Harbaugh once again on the sideline. The program's focus should be on rectifying the situation and ensuring that all activities align with NCAA regulations, particularly given their aspirations for a national championship.

Moving forward, Michigan must address its policies and procedures to prevent any further violations and regain its commitment to the highest standards of compliance.
