The Miami Dolphins have recently bid farewell to their defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, just two weeks after being eliminated from the postseason. Fangio's departure has left a significant void in the coaching staff, and the Dolphins are now on the lookout for a suitable replacement.
Fangio joined head coach Mike McDaniel's regime last offseason and played a crucial role in guiding Miami's defense through a series of injuries to key players. However, with his departure, the Dolphins must now find a candidate who can step into his shoes and maintain the team's defensive prowess.
Among the potential options on the Dolphins' shortlist is linebackers coach Anthony Campanile. Campanile showcased his intense leadership skills and impressive work ethic on "Hard Knocks" this year, particularly in group settings. He also interviewed for the defensive coordinator position last year and recently interviewed for the same role with the New York Giants.
Another candidate being considered is former Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Brandon Staley. Despite being fired from his previous position, Staley's defensive expertise cannot be overlooked. In 2020, his defense with the Los Angeles Rams held opponents to the fewest yards per game and the second-fewest points per game. Staley also had a successful working relationship with Jalen Ramsey while coaching the Rams, potentially adding value to his candidacy.
The Dolphins may also turn to their own coaching staff, specifically outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik. Slowik, who is currently rising through the ranks, has been with the Dolphins for two seasons and took charge of the outside linebackers in 2023. Under his guidance, Miami's edge rushers delivered impressive performances this season, earning him credit for their success.
Another experienced option on the Dolphins' radar is Wink Martindale, formerly the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Martindale recently parted ways with the Giants, having previously held the same position with the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos. His wealth of experience could prove valuable to McDaniel and his staff, with expectations for him to bring a fresh perspective to the defensive strategy.
As the Miami Dolphins embark on their search for a replacement, they remain focused on finding a candidate capable of filling the void left by Fangio's departure. With a list of strong potential candidates, the team is eager to maintain their defensive prowess and build upon the progress made under Fangio's guidance.
