MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins have announced that linebacker Jerome Baker has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury he sustained during last week's victory over the Washington Commanders. Initially, it was believed that Baker's injury was not significant and would not require a stint on injured reserve. However, after further evaluation, the decision was made to place him on IR.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed that there were multiple factors that contributed to this decision, including roster considerations. McDaniel stated, "Because of the roster, he'll be going to short-term IR, or IR in general. You can't really forecast what, when, and why. That doesn't rule other people out. We just, for the roster, it was very on the line of his timeline."
To fill the void left by Baker's absence, the Dolphins have signed linebacker Calvin Munson to their 53-man roster from the New England Patriots' practice squad. Duke Riley is expected to step in and start in Baker's place.
With Baker now on injured reserve, the Dolphins currently have two starters sidelined. However, they can only activate one more player from the reserve list for the remainder of the season. Mike McDaniel expressed uncertainty about who the next activated player will be, mentioning Isaiah Wynn as a possibility, along with Baker or another player.
Regarding Baker's potential return, McDaniel admitted the difficulty in predicting the timeframe and said, "To assume that is not irresponsible, but I wouldn't put money on it because it's not known, if that makes sense." It remains uncertain when Baker will be able to rejoin the team.
In addition to Baker, starting right guard Rob Hunt will also miss the upcoming Monday night game against the Tennessee Titans due to an aggravated hamstring injury. However, left tackle Terron Armstead, who has been dealing with knee and ankle injuries, did not experience any setbacks during the week, making him questionable for Monday's game.
Safety Jevon Holland, who was absent from last week's game due to knee injuries, is also considered questionable for Monday's matchup. McDaniel and his staff are monitoring his progress and will make a decision following Saturday's practice sessions.
"We'll take that up through tomorrow, but he'll be on the practice field today doing some stuff," McDaniel said regarding Holland's potential availability.
As the Miami Dolphins face the Tennessee Titans on Monday night, they will have to overcome the absence of key players while relying on their depth and shifting roster to fill the gaps left by injuries. The team remains determined to navigate these challenges and secure a victory on the field.
