In the upcoming season, the New York Mets are counting on several key players to rebound, break out, and maintain their performance to propel the team into playoff contention. While the offseason mainly focused on shoring up the bullpen, filling out the rotation, and adding bench depth, it is the existing core players who hold the most crucial questions surrounding the team's success.

One player generating significant interest is Pete Alonso, who enters his walk year with the Mets. As Alonso approaches free agency, both he and the team have expressed a desire for a long-term union. However, new president of baseball operations David Stearns mentioned not to expect a contract extension until the next offseason, given Alonso's talent, Scott Boras as his agent, and the historical trajectory of similar scenarios. Despite the uncertainty, Alonso's ability to thrive in the New York spotlight, evidenced by his impressive rookie season with 53 home runs, offers hope for another strong year.

Alonso's home run prowess puts him in a position to climb the Mets' franchise leaderboard. With 192 career home runs, he begins 2024 tied for the fourth-most in franchise history alongside Howard Johnson. While surpassing Mike Piazza's 220 homers for third place seems within reach, overtaking David Wright's 242 and Darryl Strawberry's 252 will require Alonso's prolonged presence on the team. If he continues to excel, Alonso could become the Mets' home run king sometime in 2025.

Another player whose performance will significantly impact the team's success is Starling Marte. The 35-year-old veteran outfielder has battled injuries and underwent multiple surgeries on his groin. Last season, Marte was forced to shut things down in August due to a persistent discomfort. Despite concerns about his ability to stay healthy, the Mets did not acquire much insurance for Marte during the offseason. Early indications from spring training suggest that Marte is on track for a productive season, but the Mets will closely monitor his health and provide him with necessary rest and designated hitter days to maximize his contribution to the team's offense.

The Mets are also placing faith in the potential of young players Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. Despite struggling in their rookie seasons, the third baseman Baty and designated hitter Vientos are poised to secure full-time roles in the upcoming season. The team believes in the value of giving opportunities to young players, and the duo's top-tier Draft pedigrees and potential make them compelling prospects. While their initial hype may have waned due to subpar performances, the Mets are committed to providing them with ample chances to showcase their improvement and contribute positively to the team.

As the new season approaches, the Mets' success relies on the performances of these key players. Whether it be Alonso's potential contract situation, Marte's ability to stay healthy, or the development of young talents like Baty and Vientos, their contributions will significantly impact the team's quest for a playoff berth. With the right combination of resurgence, breakout performances, and solid player development, the Mets hope to make a mark in the upcoming season.
