Reports from NFL Network and ESPN indicate that Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is unlikely to play in Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers due to a right thumb injury. As a result, the Rams are expected to start backup quarterback Brett Rypien at Lambeau Field.

According to sources, both Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and Adam Schefter of ESPN have confirmed that Stafford's injury will likely sideline him for the upcoming game. Rams head coach Sean McVay has stated that they will give Stafford until gametime to see if he is able to play.

If Stafford indeed sits out, it will mark the second consecutive season where he misses a start at Lambeau Field. Last season, the Packers defeated a Rams team led by Baker Mayfield in Green Bay.

Stafford did not participate in practice throughout the week, and with the Rams having a bye week following this game, it seems they are cautious about rushing him back too soon.

In Stafford's absence, the Rams will turn to Brett Rypien, their backup quarterback. Rypien stepped in for Stafford after his injury during the game against the Dallas Cowboys. In that game, he completed 5 of 10 passes for 42 yards and took a sack. Rypien is no stranger to starting, having appeared in nine career games with three starts.

During his regular-season appearances, Rypien has completed 85 of 140 passes for 820 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions. His average yards per attempt stands at 5.9, with a 42.0 percent success rate and a passer rating of 62.8.

One notable victory on Rypien's resume came when he was the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, leading them to a win against the New York Jets in Week 4 of the 2020 season. However, he also suffered a loss to the Jets during a start in Week 7 of the 2022 season. Rypien and the Broncos did secure a victory against the Arizona Cardinals during Week 15 of the 2022 season.

Rypien joined the Rams in May, initially starting off on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster in September. During the preseason, he completed 14 of 23 passes over three appearances in August.

With Stafford's status uncertain, all eyes will be on Brett Rypien as he takes over the reins in the critical matchup against the Packers. Both the Rams and their fans will hope that Rypien can rise to the occasion and lead the team to victory.
