The Miami Marlins are reportedly set to make a groundbreaking move by appointing Rachel Balkovec as their new director of player development, sources within the organization have revealed to MLB.com. While the Marlins have not yet officially confirmed the news, Balkovec's arrival is expected to bring a fresh perspective and diverse experience to the team.
At 36 years old, Balkovec is already a familiar face in the world of Minor League baseball, having worked in various roles across three organizations since embarking on her professional baseball career in 2012. Notably, she recently served as the Class A skipper for the New York Yankees over the past two seasons.
Balkovec's trailblazing journey in baseball began when she became the first woman to work as a full-time strength and conditioning coach in affiliated baseball. In addition, she boasts a strong analytical background, having pursued exercise science as a major at Creighton and New Mexico during her time as an NCAA Division I catcher for their softball teams. Balkovec later earned a master's degree in kinesiology from LSU in 2012.
Following her studies, Balkovec gained valuable experience in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, working as an interim strength and conditioning coach for the Rookie Advanced Johnson City team. Her exceptional work in this role earned her the Appalachian League Award for Strength Coach of the Year. In 2014, she broke more barriers by becoming the first female full-time professional baseball coordinator. The Houston Astros then hired her as their Latin America strength and conditioning coordinator in 2016, and she eventually became the strength and conditioning coach for the organization's Double-A affiliate in 2018.
Balkovec's dedication to furthering her knowledge and expertise led her to pursue a master's degree at Vrije Universiteit in the Netherlands, where she conducted research on human movement sciences with a specialization in biomechanics. She also spent time at Driveline Baseball, a data-driven performance center, focusing on eye tracking for hitters and hip movement for pitchers. During the disrupted 2020 Minor League season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Balkovec coached in the Australian Baseball League. Additionally, she was recently named to the coaching staff for the 2021 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Coors Field.
If the reports are true, Balkovec's appointment would mark the latest addition to the Marlins' front office under the leadership of new president of baseball operations, Peter Bendix. Earlier, Bendix brought in Gabe Kapler as assistant general manager and Vinesh Kanthan as director of baseball operations as part of his restructuring efforts. Since the departure of director of player development Geoff DeGroot in September 2022, the Marlins have been operating under the guidance of director of Minor League operations Hector Crespo, albeit without the official title.
The Marlins' farm system has faced challenges in producing homegrown position players in recent years, resulting in a dip in MLB Pipeline's rankings. With Balkovec set to take charge of player development, the team hopes to revitalize its prospects and enhance its ability to develop talent internally.
The official announcement of Balkovec's appointment is eagerly awaited, as Marlins fans anticipate the arrival of a visionary leader who will contribute to the team's long-term success in the MLB.
