In a surprising turn of events, it appears that the Mac Jones era in New England may be coming to an end. After two underwhelming seasons, there is speculation that the Patriots may consider trading the young quarterback for a reasonable asset this spring.
Joe Dickinson, Jones' personal throwing coach of 14 years, disclosed in a recent podcast with NBC Sports' Tom E. Curran that he had been recommending a trade for Jones even before the 2022 season. Dickinson expressed concerns about the direction of the team after offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left for Las Vegas, and felt that a trade would be beneficial for both Jones and the Patriots.
"I just said, 'Hey, I just think it would be better for you and the Patriots if they trade you,'" Dickinson revealed. "If you really want this guy to work, you're going to put the right guys around him, helping him. And if you don't, this is really easy, just trade him, get another guy, because that's allowed and that's within the rules."
Jones, who idolizes former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, decided to stay with the team despite Dickinson's advice. However, both Jones and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick experienced a tumultuous next two seasons. Jones was benched four times in 2023 and eventually lost his starting position for good. Meanwhile, Belichick was fired after a disappointing 4-13 season.
Addressing the breakdown of the partnership between Jones and Belichick, Dickinson acknowledged that there is blame to be assigned to all parties involved. He stated, "The truth is, it probably contributed a little bit on everybody. Look, Bill has earned his stripes. He's earned the right to say or do whatever you wanted to do knowing that it may or may not cost him his job."
The rumors surrounding a potential trade of Mac Jones have generated considerable buzz among NFL fans. It remains to be seen whether the Patriots will actively pursue trade offers for the young quarterback or choose to give him another chance to prove himself in the upcoming season.
