In a surprising move, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has decided not to pursue any head coaching opportunities for the upcoming 2024 season. This marks the second consecutive year that Johnson has taken himself out of the running for a head coaching position.

According to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, Johnson has informed both the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders that he intends to return to Detroit and continue serving as the Lions' offensive coordinator. The decision comes as Johnson desires another chance to win a Super Bowl with the Lions, as reported by the Washington Post.

Interestingly, ESPN reported that Johnson's asking price for a head coaching position scared off several teams who were in search of new leadership. It was rumored that Johnson was seeking at least $15 million per year, a salary that would place him among the highest-paid head coaches in the NFL. However, Johnson's agent has since disputed this claim.

At only 37 years old, Johnson has made a significant impact on the Lions' offense during his two seasons as offensive coordinator. Under his guidance, the team finished in the top five in both points per game and yards per game in each of the last two seasons. In 2023, the Lions achieved a franchise record of 12 wins and clinched their first-ever NFC North title. They went on to win two playoff games before ultimately falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. This success marked a significant milestone for a team that had only won one playoff game in the previous 65 seasons combined.

Johnson's journey with the Lions began in 2019, where he started as an offensive quality control coach before progressing to roles as the tight ends coach and passing game coordinator. He finally assumed the position of offensive coordinator in 2022. Prior to joining the Lions, Johnson gained valuable coaching experience as an offensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins for seven seasons. He initially started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boston College after his playing days as a walk-on quarterback at the University of North Carolina.

As the Lions head into the offseason, Johnson's decision to remain as offensive coordinator provides continuity and stability to an offense that has shown great potential under his guidance. With their sights set on a Super Bowl victory, the Lions will look to build upon their recent success and continue to develop under Johnson's leadership.
