In a disappointing Monday Night Football showdown, the Las Vegas Raiders suffered a humiliating loss to the Detroit Lions, raising more questions than answers for the struggling team midway through the 2023 season. The Raiders' offense, which has hit new lows, took the spotlight as the primary focus of this week's winners and losers column.

However, amidst the struggles, defensive standout Maxx Crosby continues to shine and prove his elite level of play. Crosby, once again, delivered an outstanding performance and earned a remarkable 90.1 mark from Pro Football Focus (PFF), ranking fourth among edge defenders for the week.

Crosby's exceptional skills aren't limited to his pass-rushing abilities. He has consistently proven himself as one of the league's best run defenders this season, earning an impressive PFF grade of 91.5. In Week 8, Crosby recorded seven defensive stops against the run, the most at his position.

His remarkable performance throughout the season has catapulted Crosby to become PFF's third-highest-graded edge defender with a score of 91.6. Notably, he leads the league in pressures with 47 and is tied for the most defensive stops with 27, consolidating his All-Pro campaign.

While Crosby's contributions have been invaluable, the struggles of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo continue to haunt the Raiders' offense. Garoppolo's inconsistencies were evident once again in the Week 8 loss. He threw an interception in every game and currently holds the undesirable title of leading the NFL in picks with nine, despite missing two games.

Garoppolo's performance in the pocket has been lackluster, characterized by "happy feet" and holding onto the ball longer than necessary. His inability to connect on deep passes was particularly evident in Monday night's game, going 0-4 on throws of 20 or more yards past the line of scrimmage. With a measly PFF grade of 27.6 in such throws, he also added an interception to his stat line.

The frustration surrounding Garoppolo's performance raises questions about his future as the starting quarterback. Fans and analysts have been pondering when the Raiders will bench Garoppolo and give Aidan O'Connell a chance to start. Following the game, when asked about potentially benching Garoppolo, coach Josh McDaniels remained noncommittal, stating, "I'm not going to talk about that right now."

On a positive note, linebacker Robert Spillane showcased a commendable performance against the run in the game. Spillane earned a notable 82.5 PFF run defense grade, ranking eighth among linebackers for the week. He registered six stops as a run defender, along with two pressures on seven pass rushes, demonstrating his versatility as a player.

Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, however, found himself on the losers list for the week. Renfrow's lackluster Monday night performance, where he only caught two of four targets for 19 yards and mixed in a drop and unfortunate route slip, has made it harder for the Raiders' brass to strike a trade deal. Renfrow has been the subject of trade talks in recent weeks, but his unproductive outing may have hindered his chances of being moved to another club.

The game did have some highlights for the Raiders, with cornerback Marcus Peters finally securing his first interception in silver and black. Peters added excitement to the moment by returning the interception for a touchdown, bringing the game within two points at the start of the second half. The pick-six marked his seventh career interception return for a touchdown, putting him in a tie for seventh all-time and just five away from Rod Woodson's record.

Despite Peters' stellar performance, the Raiders fell short, emphasizing the struggles of their offense. Thayer Munford Jr., who made his third consecutive start on Monday night, failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Munford Jr. allowed four pressures in just 13 snaps in pass protection, raising concerns about his abilities as a pass blocker. Additionally, his poor run-blocking performance earned him a disappointing PFF grade of 45.9.

With an offense built with over $101 million of cap space dedicated to their roster, the Raiders' current ranking of 30th in points per game (15.8) is an alarming reality. The continuing disappointment has led to calls for change, with coach McDaniels now being listed as a loser until the Raiders' offense can produce more than 20 points in a game.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether the Raiders can find solutions to their offensive woes and capitalize on the exceptional performances of players like Maxx Crosby. The team's ultimate success will rely on their ability to address their offensive struggles and find a winning formula moving forward.
